Statement Condemning Attacks Against Journalists During the Euromaidan Rallies in Ukraine

Internews condemns the attacks directed at journalists attempting to report on the Euromaidan protests in Kyiv, Ukraine. According to local media organizations, 50 journalists and media workers have been injured since the protests began in response to the Ukrainian government’s decision not to sign Ukraine’s association agreement with the European Union in Vilnius, Lithuania on November 29. Several journalists were attacked by baton-wielding riot police as they covered a stand-off between police and protesters in front of the Presidential Administration building on December 1st. According to the Kyiv Post, “while some journalists suffered from flying rocks, tear gas and noise grenades when being in the middle of the clash, many report they were deliberately beaten by the riot police, and showing their journalist IDs didn’t help.”

Internews urges the Ukrainian authorities to bring those responsible for these attacks to justice and to take concrete steps to guarantee the safety of media workers in the country.

Internews is an international non-profit organization whose mission is to empower local media worldwide to give people the news and information they need, the ability to connect and the means to make their voices heard. Internews has operated in Ukraine since 1992, and currently manages the Ukraine Media Project, a 5-year USAID-funded project that supports and develops the Ukrainian media sector.
